conversation passe'

Good grief yall, Im afraid the next generation is not going to know how to communicate without an electrical device in their hands. Albert Einstein predicted when technology surpasses human interaction, we will become a nation of idiots. I hate to admit it but he was spot on, and that moment is dangerously close, too. Its pretty sad when you go to a meeting, doctor's office, a party, out to dinner, on vacation, a sporting event, the theatre, ANYwhere really and 90% of the people around you have their phones, iPads or laptops out totally glued to the screens and disengaged from their surroundings. Seriously, people have become so distracted they have fallen into fountains and been hit by cars!

I think its crazy how dependant we have become on technology. For cryin out loud, pretty soon we aren't going to know how to talk to each other at all! Why, its probably already happening. Im a talker yall and no machine is ever going to replace a good old fashioned conversation. But Im a little afraid mine is the last generation that will know how to speak using complete sentences much less actually spell out words, lol.

Its sort of overwhelming when you think about where society is headed with all this technology butting into every cotton pickin aspect of our lives. Take books for instance; I am an avid reader and have been, well, forever. Nothing feels quite as wonderful as delving into another's world and totally losing one's self. I never thought reading a book on an e-reader would appeal to me but here I am confessing to be just that person! Im afraid I have joined the ranks of those distracted by technology.

Oh dont get me wrong, I do miss holding a book in my hands, the feel of the paper, turning the page and all, but on the flip side I surely to goodness dont miss the pain in my hands from holding a stiff new book open for any extended period. Nor do I miss falling asleep and having the book hit me square in the face! Why, no matter how big the book, it always weighs the same on my Kindle. I can make the print as large as I like and adjust the brightness as well. Im sort of ashamed to say it but Kindle Fire has stolen my heart.

Speaking of books, I have a good friend who recently published her first book, "The Gospel According to Mamma". I have known Annette and her mamma for over 27 years, before Annette started writing columns for Texas newspapers, parenting magazines and spirituality websites. To borrow from my Amazon review; This book is filled with wonderful insights and spiritual guidance in dealing with life's challenges. Annette's comforting words are uplifting, helping one realize that no matter what life hurls at you, love, hope and faith can get you through the darkest of times. Annette handles this with a light touch and never comes off as being preachy or overbearing; more like a warm hug from a dear friend. This book would be a great Christmas gift, especially for a young person starting out on their own! And yes, I read it on my Kindle.

Another of my Facebook Friends, Jennie Fields is enjoying the success of her latest book, too. "Age of Desire" is a novel about Edith Wharton's life. The painstaking research Jennie did for this book must have been fascinating as Edith was a very complicated, multifaceted woman. Im warning you though, its addictive! Pick it up or give it for Christmas! There, I've practically done all yall's Christmas shopping right here!
