Spring Fever & THE Wedding

Tuesday, May 3, 2011
I hav'ta say, nothin' much beats the sight of bluebonnets and other Texas wildflowers all along the highways every spring. And starting around mid to late February I get excited about diggin in the dirt, planting flowers, veggies, herbs and tomatoes. Shortly after planting, the rigors of garden maintenance hits. I try to get right on it but hesitate pulling some things up because to tell you the truth I dont remember if they are things I planted last year or some unruly weed. Goodness, I have this one thing growing in the front bed I didn't pull up (thinking it was a flower), and I swear it turned out to be a Little Shop of Horrors plant! I like'ta died trying to pull, and then saw the darn thing down and it kept coming back bigger and stronger than before! Its won for the time being so now everytime I walk by I curse it out. It makes me feel a little better.

I love the fact that birds and squirrels, (just like us humans), seem to go a little crazy when the weather warms a bit. This rangy lookin' squirrel drives the pups to distraction. He occasionally will sit on the ledge of the library window about the same time the pups are looking out. The first time scared them to pieces on account he was so close and all, but now they buck up, gird their loins and look for him, ready to scare him back! Its pretty funny to watch because Miss Cricket squeals like a pig. It seems she never learned how to really bark like a dog when she gets excited but she sure knows how to squeal! I have a front row seat to all this, right here at my desk.

And I guess we were all spellbound by the royal wedding last Friday. It was a pleasant break from the tornado devastation that ripped through the South, killing so many and destroying so much property. It was all I could do to watch the news and not cry. So it was especially nice of those Royals to help us out and provide something to smile about. Mercy goodness, the fashion spectacles put the Oscars to shame. If it had been on in the evening I would have enjoyed a viewing cocktail but as it was on heinously early, the only appropriate beverages were coffee and hot tea while trying to shake out the cobwebs. I probably should have made some scones.

I love hats and any opportunity to wear one! Most of the fascinators worn to the wedding were quite festive. I have actually owned a "fascinator cocktail hat" in the past that clipped into my hair at a jaunty angle. It had a few sparkles and scant feathers but was quite diminutive compared with the Royal Wedding fascinators. Several were pretty tacky and some, downright outrageous. Like that Posh Beckham with what looked like a blue TicTac stuck on her forehead. And can someone tell me why is she always so miserable looking? Mercy goodness, you might think being married to such a hunky soccer player/panty model she would be smiling to beat the band! I wondered if the scowl was due to seeing her reflection. David Beckham is always smiling and his dreadful, no bigger than an afterthought, wife always looks like she is fixin to hoick up something awful. She is hungry, I just know it.

And weren't Fergie's girls a sight. Those poor things, what were they thinking? Im not sure which one looked worse. In fact, Im not real sure which one is Beatrice and which one is Eugenie, but they are both fashion holocausts. Talk about "sent for and couldn't go", they should have been sent back home to change! Why, its hard to know where to begin. Eugenie (?) looked so uncomfortable in the tight, wrinkled, bow bedecked blue thing she was lashed down and poured into. She kept tugging at it, I figure probably either trying to breathe or even up the hem, to no avail. I think Bea's (?) hat must have been made to honor the antelope but her dress was lovely and appeared to fit her just fine. Their make-up took me back to the days of Tammy Faye Baker! She must have written a book on make-up tips I wasn't privy to.

Yep, it was prime people watch'in and fashion critique'in, British style. I thought it was special that the Queen Mum matched her outfit to William's teeth. There must be a real shortage of dental professionals in the U.K., though Kate's teeth are pearly white and that only accentuates how dingy William's are. Then there is Princess Anne, she never fails to disappoint. Lord have mercy, as the years go by she looks more and more like several of her favorite pets, depending on what side of her you're on (the horse side or the Corgi side). And Im not sure what was worse; the thing on her body or the thing perched on her head! Those Royals dont appear to own a mirror or an iron between them!

Im thankful Kate's family has some fashion sense and Im praying some of it rubs off on the Royals. Her mother and sister were just lovely and while I was a tad disappointed in Kate's wedding dress, no one could call it ugly by any stretch. It was understated, which Im sure she was going for after seeing Diana's, bless her heart.

They look so happy and in love. In 30 years I hope to see the same looks on their offspring's face, on their wedding day. That would surely be a wonderful legacy.
