Things That Go Bump in The Night

Im not superstitious by nature, yall, but I have had a few ghostly encounters in my life. Why, when the boys and I lived in my grandparent's house, we all had a few out of the ordinary things happen. More often than not, we would unlock the front door, go inside and smell my grandmother's cooking! I could swear there was a chicken in the oven along with her corn souffle! Of course, we would always end up being disappointed and hungry. There were times when lights would flip on unexpectedly and times when it sounded like someone was coming down the stairs, too!

The boys and I laughed about these occurrences and chalked it up to it being an old house with a history. Heck, if the house happened to be haunted, they were our family members so there was no reason to be afraid. We just accepted them without question, pretty much until a little friend of Reagan's tried to spend the night. I ended up taking him home after midnight because he was scared to pieces and crying hysterically. That being said, Im still not superstitious. I just take things as they come. I like to think Im on good terms with those living and those not so much. After all, my great granddaddy and my great uncle died in that house so I felt like maybe they were watching over us.

Sister and I grew up hearing and knowing about the Lady of the Lake. She was a beautiful, mysterous young lady who drowned in White Rock lake. She lived on Gaston Avenue so every once in a while she could be seen catching a ride to her home. When they arrived at the address she would be gone, leaving only a puddle in the backseat. Now, I dont know about you but I would be pretty miffed if someone left a puddle in my backseat after I was nice enough to give them a ride. But the story goes that the driver would walk up to the door and ring the bell and ask the people if they knew this puddle maker. They would cry and tell him it was their long gone daughter and the events surrounding her death. It was always a tragic story. We thought it must have been true.

Imagine my surprise when last night they had a story on the news about the legend of The Lady of the Lake. Several folks were asked if and what they knew about it. I didn't think they asked the right people though because not a single one of them sounded like they knew a lick about it. Then they showed this poor ghostly image of a ravaged old sea hag rather than the lovely ephemeral image of the beautiful young girl in a gossamer gown I grew up with. I know everyone ages but if I were the Lady of the Lake, I would haunt whoever was responsible for portraying her as that haggard old woman. Sheesh, thats enough to cause someone to come back from the dead. Could there be a defamation of ghostly character or something?
