It's summertime and the living is easy
Fish are jumping and the cotton is high
Your daddy's rich and your mama's good-looking
Hush, little baby don't you cry
don't cry, don't cry, don't cry

I was doing OK till we hit a string of 100+ days then I turned into an old hound dog just crawlin from one cool nappin spot to another. Well, not really but its sure temptin on these hot days. Until we left for the mountains last week, it seemed like I had the energy level of a salted slug. Plus, I was getting downright surly and snappish which is totally not my personality. I think all this extreme heat tends to make folks cranky, me included. Why, I get up early-ish, go to the gym and try to get my rat-killin done before it becomes a blazin inferno out there. Then I drag my carcass home and never step foot outside again until the sun finally goes down and I venture out to water my shriveled and crispy flowers. Ahhh Texas summers.

The bad thing about leaving for a few days is that even though I took precautions and filled Cricket's plastic swimmin pool and some other tubs with water and put my flower pots in them, when we got back the tubs were all dry as a bone and and the flowers had about had it . Im making an effort to bring them back around but if it doesn't work, we will just have to be flowerless the rest of the summer. As much as I love splashes of color, I cant be bothered with them dyin on me. Mercy goodness, summer is depressin enough without addin the death of flora and fauna into the mix. Do tiny flogs count as fauna? Those little buggers are always hiding in my tomato plants and they hop out at me when Im checking to see if anything is growing in there. So far its only the little frogs that seem to be producin:-(

We had a fine time in the mountains of Southeastern New Mexico. It was in the 60*'s and 70*'s there, 50* at night. Perfect weather if you ask me. We go every year, occasionally twice, but its a long drive for a scant few days. This time the crowds were small because wildfires were everywhere, all over the state. We drove thru the smoke heading into Ruidoso around Hondo. Sam Donaldson's ranch had both a lightening strike and a campfire run amok. It devastated thousands of acres and driving thru the smoke and seeing the charred remains of the treeline was very sad. We came up on the firefighters headquarters, a tent city of sorts, on the edge of town. The people there really show their appreciation of them, too. Why, I wanted to give each and every one of those brave firefighters a big ol hug, but these days you really cant do that sort of thing.

One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing
you spread your wings and take to the sky
But until that morning there is nothing can harm you
With your daddy and mommy standing by
They are standing by, I know, don't cry

This summer I have been all wadded up over the Casey Anthony trial. And now that she has been found not guilty, Im thinking this is an example of everything thats wrong in our country. It seems we do not have to worry about being held accountable for our actions anymore. Every abhorrent behavior is excusable as long as there is a reason for it. If you can come up with something or someone to blame it seems highly likely you might get off with a slap on the wrist. Im not going to go on about it but I have shed tears for that little girl right along with many others who are just as stunned over the verdict.

Justice will be carried out Im afraid when she is free. She will not have an easy life if she has one at all.

Summertime, summertime, summertime
and the living is, living is easy
Fish are, I know the fish are jumping
and cotton is so high
Your daddy is so, so rich and your mama good-
she had to be good-looking
so hush, little baby, don't you cry
don't you cry, no no, don't cry
no need to cry, don't cry, don't cry
summertime, summertime....
I just love that song, dont you? Its pure sultry in every sense of the word and It can get under your skin. Makes me a little melancholy though; reminds me of Mama and Daddy and the olden days when we were kids in the summer. When life was simple and we knew right from wrong, good from bad.
